Water Heater Fuel Types
Thanks to developments in technology, water heaters have branched out and are no longer limited to the traditional gas or electric options. Homeowners can choose from the following options:
An electric water heater is typically the most affordable model, with a variety of high efficiency options available. They can range in size from 2.5 to 70+ gallons and use two heating elements to produce warm water and maintain it throughout the day.
Gas powered water heaters are slightly more expensive than electric heaters, however they are more energy efficient. A burner is used to heat up the water and air needs to be circulating around the burner to ensure proper function. They range in size from 30 to 70+ gallons.
Heat Pump or Hybrid
Heat pump/hybrid water heaters are more expensive to buy up front, but offer significant savings on your yearly energy bills. They are larger in size than standard electric or gas heaters, ranging in sizes from 40-70+ gallons. They are available as built in water tanks or add-ons to an existing tank. They use energy from the air to heat the water.
No matter which type of water heater you want, our professional plumbers have the experience needed to quickly and efficiently install or repair your water heater. For over 60 years we have been providing superior plumbing services throughout Waukesha, Brookfield and surrounding areas.
Wisconsin Water Heater Types
The number of people living in your home will determine the type and gallon size required:
|Number of People||Minimum Gallon Capacity|
There are two different types of water heaters available- storage tank and tankless/on-demand heaters. Your daily water usage and the other appliances in your home which require hot water, are all factors in determining which type of water heater will best suit your needs.
This is the most common type of water heater found in most residential homes. These units feature an insulated tank. The water is heated and stored until it is needed. Some things to keep in mind when purchasing a storage tank water heater:
- Recovery Rate
- Tank Size
- Energy Efficiency
Our Waukesha plumbers are happy to discuss your water needs and point you in the direction of a storage tank water heater which would best suit your needs. Stop in or give us a call – we are always happy to help.
Tankless or On-Demand Water Heaters
These models do not store hot water, instead they heat water as needed. The water passes through a series of coils to heat it. Since these models only heat water when you need it, these tend to be more energy-efficient. Sizing of tankless units is critical. Many big box stores sell tankless units as a "one size fits all" solution, resulting in a unit that is not capable of providing enough hot water to serve multiple showers or fixtures at once. The S&K professionals will not let this happen to you. Let our experienced plumbers walk you through each available type of water heater to determine which tankless water heater is right for your home.
New Water Heater Energy Efficiency Requirements
As of April 16th 2015, water heater manufacturers are required to meet new water heater efficiency standards. This means water heaters produced after this date will be taller and wider to accommodate the increased insulation needed to meet the new requirements. If you have any questions, feel free to call S&K Pump and Plumbing.
